Production: The film adaptation of “The Wild Robot” was officially announced by DreamWorks Animation on September 28, 2023. Chris Sanders took inspiration from classic Disney animations and the works of Hayao Miyazaki, aiming for a visual style that he described as “a Monet painting in a Miyazaki forest.” This film marks a significant milestone for DreamWorks, as it will be the last movie entirely animated in-house before the studio shifts to relying more on external studios.
Music: The score for the film is composed by Kris Bowers, making his debut in animated film scoring. Additionally, two original songs were created for the movie, performed by Maren Morris. “Kiss the Sky” and “Even When I’m Not” are integral to the film, with the latter featured in the end credits. These songs were written by a team including Morris, Ali Tamposi, Michael Pollack, Delacey, and the Johnson brothers.
Marketing: The first trailer and poster for “The Wild Robot” were unveiled on March 5, 2024, featuring a cover of “What a Wonderful World” by Reuben and the Dark. The trailer debuted in theaters shortly after, in front of screenings of “Kung Fu Panda 4.” The design of Roz has drawn comparisons to iconic film robots like WALL-E, Baymax, and The Iron Giant. A second trailer and a new poster were released on June 11, 2024.
Release: “The Wild Robot” is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024 as the festival’s opening film. It will be theatrically released in the United States on September 27, 2024, and in the United Kingdom on October 18, 2024. Initially scheduled for a September 20 release, the date was pushed back to avoid competition with Paramount Animation’s “Transformers One.”
Streaming: Following its theatrical release, “The Wild Robot” will be available on Peacock for the first four months of its pay-TV window, after which it will stream on Netflix for ten months, before returning to Peacock for the remaining four months.
